The Judicial Branch decides how state laws should be applied. With the senate's approval, they can appoint judges to the Supreme and Superior courts. To be in the Judicial Branch, the President has to elect you then 51% of the Senate has to vote for you. Federal judges serve until they die, senators serve for only 6 years. The reason why they serve this long is because they have one case that deals with something important then five years later a simular case comes to court and they can give them the same sentence.
